Stop by for neighborly service
About Us
A brief history…
Wellman Cooperative Telephone Association (WCTA) has served the Wellman, Iowa area for over a century, evolving from a group of independent “switcher lines” to a modern fiber-optic provider. Below is a historical timeline based on the cooperative’s major milestones.
Early 1900s: The Era of Mutual Lines
- Early 1900s: Wellman Mutual Telephone Company was formed to provide local service within the town. A switchboard is purchased for $260, and basic lines were ran to subscribers' homes.
- Expansion: Rural areas were served through "switcher lines." These lines were owned and governed by rural subscribers who paid Wellman Mutual for "switching" their calls to others.
- 1952: The company was formally incorporated as the Wellman Cooperative Telephone Association (WCTA) following a merger between Wellman Mutual and the various independent rural switcher lines.
Mid-20th Century: Modernization and Automation
- 1958: The network undergoes a conversion to dial. This eliminated the need for manual switchboard operators to connect every call, allowing residents to dial numbers directly.
- 1973–1974: WCTA began replacing aerial lines (wires on poles) with buried copper cable. During this time, the company achieved single party service, finally ending the "party line" era where neighbors shared the same telephone line.
Late 20th Century: The Digital Revolution
- 1981: WCTA installs its first digital telephone switch (the Stromberg-Carlson XY switch), significantly improving call quality and introducing features like call waiting and three-way calling.
- 1980s: The company formed WKIJ, a sales organization for equipment maintenance. It also joined Iowa Network Services (INS) to offer long-distance equal access.
- 1994: WCTA began its first steps into fiber optics, joining three neighboring companies to install a fiber optic toll route.
- 1995: A second-generation digital switch was installed to support SS7 signaling and Caller ID. This year also marked the launch of dial up internet services for the Wellman community.
2000 to Present: The Fiber-to-the-Home Era
- 2000: WCTA partnered with Sharon Telephone to launch SEI Wireless LLC, bringing cellular service to the local area.
- 2010: IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) was launched. WCTA began a massive infrastructure project to build a "Fiber-to-the-Home" (FTTH) network.
- 2014: The central office is upgraded to a Metaswitch soft switch. WCTA announced that its entire Wellman service area has been officially cut over to a 100% fiber to the home network.
- 2024–2026: WCTA continues to expand broadband access, recently participating in several state and federal grant programs to ensure all locations in its territory have access to gigabit-speed (1000M/1000M) internet.
